When A Major Appliance Needs Repair
Kitchen ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers, and built-in microwave ovens are all considered major appliances. The cost to repair such an appliance is far less than the replacement cost, unlike toasters, blenders, or other small appliances that can usually be bought for under $50.
Most major appliances have warranties that last for several years-sometimes as much as seven to ten years. If they do not have warranties, a maintenance agreement can be bought at the time of purchase, for just a small amount more.
When one considers that one repair may run $200, including parts and labor, the $250 or so that is paid for a maintenance agreement is a good investment. This is particularly true when the maintenance agreements are for three or more years.
However, if no maintenance agreement exists, and a major appliance does need repairing, it is best to call the Service Center of the company that manufactured the unit (GE Service Center for a GE appliance; Maytag Service Center for a Maytag appliance, etc.) These places usually have their own repair staff, or they contract with an appliance repair business in the homeowner’s area to fix their product.
Either way, the parts will be replaced with name-brand parts, rather than “aftermarket” or off-brand parts. There are reputable, capable independent appliance repair companies that do service all makes and models of major appliances. One may wish to call the manufacturer service center and a trustworthy independent company and compare prices.
If the independent contractor is cheaper, and uses the proper parts, then the homeowner can certainly go that route. If, however, the homeowner is unsure that the work will be done right, using the right equipment, it may be.
