Tips to Lower Cholesterol – And Your Medical Bills!

Do you have high cholesterol and need to lower it? That is no surprise considering how many people have high cholesterol these days. To help lower your cholesterol, here are 10 tips you can get started with today.

As with anything health related, diet and exercise are the two crucial components. What you eat is critical to lowering your cholesterol levels, so that is what is included here. One thing you should know is the difference between LDL and HDL cholesterol. Simply think of HDL as “healthy” and LDL as “lousy.” HDL can actually help carry cholesterol out of your blood vessels while LDL allows it to deposit inside your artery walls. The good news is that you can change your cholesterol for the better. Here is how to do just that:

1. Have a nice sandwich on whole wheat bread or a pita with some lean turkey and lots of fresh veggies. Skip the hot dogs, bologna, and salami, and hold the Mayo. All of those are highly processed and filled with fat and cholesterol.

2. Fish, like salmon, is good. Look for wild red salmon varieties, which are very high in Omega-3 fatty acids (good fat.) Also, flax seed is a good source of Omega-3s.

3. Avoid Trans fats! Not only do they raise the lousy LDL cholesterol, they can also lower your HDL levels! Stay away from foods like margarine, shortening, and processed foods containing partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

4. Go ahead, go nuts! Look for walnuts mainly but also try almonds, macadamia nuts, cashews, and pecans. Nuts are high in fat, but it’s the good kind. (Also, use natural peanut butter instead of the normal kind which contains unhealthy Trans fats.)

5. Limit desserts and try to eat only the healthier ones like angel food cake, graham crackers, Jell-O, and fat-free frozen yogurt.

6. Eat foods that are high in fiber. Examples include whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans, and some cereals. (Look for the boxes that say “may help lower cholesterol.”)

7. Use the grill. If you’re going to have steak or burgers, grill them at home and use lean meat. This practice avoids the grease, is fun, and the meat tastes great.

8. Find a new salad dressing. Most of them are full of Trans fats and cholesterol. Olive oil is good, and maybe add vinegar or lemon juice. Also, skip the bacon bits, croutons, and egg yolks.

9. Go overboard on fruits and vegetables. They contain no cholesterol and they have lots of nutrients like antioxidants. Here are some examples: green peas, broccoli, cauliflower, apples, oranges, mangos, papaya, pineapple, tomato, garlic, onions, spinach, water chestnuts, bananas, apricots, blueberries, and kiwi.

10. Avoid fast food like french fries and anything else from the deep fryer. Those foods will raise your cholesterol like crazy, so stay away from the burger joints if you can.

11. Bonus tip: Use spices like pepper and oregano to add flavor to your dishes. They are a healthy alternative to other toppings like Mayo. That was easy, wasn’t it? Just make some of these changes and get plenty of exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, or playing basketball. You will have lower cholesterol in no time!

How Kitchens are Deep-Cleaned

For a commercial catering provider, kitchen cleanliness is critical for meeting food hygiene standards. Many organisations now make it an employee’s responsibility to thoroughly clean thier cooking station at the end of the day’s work, and this day-to-day cleaning goes a long way to keeping up hygiene standards.

Nevertheless, contaminants such as dirt, grease and bacteria will inevitably accumulate over time in hard to reach places such as behind or between work units, or on the walls and ceilings. The best way to address this inevitable build-up is to schedule regular deep-cleans by professionals who have the knowledge, experience and tools to efficiently clean those parts that cannot be readily cleaned on a day-to-day basis.

A professional kitchen deep-cleaning contractor will go about the cleaning process in a logical and systematic way. By way of an example, the contractor might follow a process along the following lines;

Firstly, the various kitchen appliances need to be dismantled so that their components can be assembled for immersion in a “diptank”. A diptank is a vessel which is filled with hot water mixed with a suitable degreaser. Components that can be removed for dipping include; grease filters, oven trays, range tops and rings, fryer pans, grill trays, dismantled fan units as well as other heavily soiled items. The components that can be dismantled are immersed in the diptank, for a period of time according to the manufacturers’ guidelines.

Next, in order to prepare for cleaning of the walls and surrounds where the kitchen will be exposed to water, all electrical items need to be isolated and all exposed switches covered with a waterproof tape of polythene cover.

To reduce the mess and disruption resulting in cleaning grease from appliances with a pressure steam cleaner, some kitchen items are often cleaned out of doors. The items to be cleaned outside would be assembled together in one area and then taken to the chosen area for cleaning. Where possible, equipment is pulled out away from the nearest wall to ensure that thorough cleaning can be achieved both beneath and behind the equipment.

The inside areas to be cleaned are now scraped of all excess grease using wire brushes or scrapers, prior to applying an appropriate cleaning solution to the surfaces. Once cleaned, all excess dirt and cleaning chemicals are cleaned off all surfaces. Walls and ceilings are normally thoroughly steam cleaned with a steam vacuum appliance. Once this is completed, then the equipment can be returned into position.

Cooking and preparation areas are sanitised. A steam cleaner and wet vacuum equipment are generally used to clean the floor areas.

Finally, the premises are tidied up – all the debris and rubbish is taken away, and the outside areas tidied up. The client will then be invited to inspect the work and once satisfied sign a customer acceptance form. Often deep-cleaning is conducted during the night in order to avoid scheduled kitchen operations. If so, then the cleaners may be responsible for locking up. In this case they will then make sure the site is secure, and keys returned to the designated place.

Professional kitchen deep-cleaning contractors are used to scheduling the deep-cleaning task, which may take several hours, at a time that avoids disrupting the kitchen’s standard operational hours, and very often that means working over-night.

What a Remodeling Job Will Actually Cost you

Unless you moved into a custom designed and built home, like you, most California homeowners have thought about putting an addition on their home, or having their kitchen or bathroom remodeled. Having a dream kitchen or bathroom, is a natural thought that, believe it or not, isn’t just for the rich and famous. Most anyone can make their remodeling dream a reality, with the right planning that is.

There are many factors to take into account when planning for your new home renovation or addition. If thought through thoroughly, and planned for correctly you can keep your home improvement project on your desired budget and running smoothly. The last thing any homeowner wants is to have to spend thousands of extra dollars to complete a project they had a limited budget for.

Here is a list of things to keep in mind when creating your budget:

• Design Costs – Before you even think about what materials or hardware you are going to need, your new bathroom/kitchen/addition needs to have blueprints drawn. Some contractors do this for free and some charge extra for this initial step. Make sure you pick a contractor that is reputable, and knows what they are doing. Stay clear of contractors that tell you they don’t need blueprints, or who don’t go through the design process with you step-by-step.

• Materials – This will be the most substantial part of your budget. Your choice in materials can change the cost of your remodel by thousands of dollars. Keep different options in mind when deciding between all your various materials. There can be big differences between hard wood, laminate, tile, stone, oak, granite, pine, etc. Try to find a good balance between style and affordability.

• Size – Will walls need to be taken down or built for your new room? Will you keep existing cabinet framing and reface the rest, or do you plan on completely new custom cabinetry? Plan on whether or not you will be demolishing the old room completely or using existing framing, piping and electrical.

• Hardware – This refers to the finishing touches in your new room, and can really add a significant cost to your project. Take your time to look for the right faucets, shower heads, sinks, appliances (stove, microwave, oven, refrigerator), door handles, mirrors, etc. Again, you want to keep the style you are looking for, but also look for inexpensive alternatives and discounted products to save you money in the end.

• Timing – Most, if not all, remodeling jobs are going to take a while. Be sure to schedule your project during a time when you will be able to occasionally leave work to go over progress, and be ready to answer any questions that might come up. No matter how well you plan in the beginning you will need and want to be involved at some point during the actual build.

These are the major aspects of a home remodeling, renovating or addition project, which all play a major part in the budget of your job. Try to account for every possible aspect of the project, keeping a list of various costs to ensure you know what to expect as a final price. There are a select few good online services which will match you with contractors in your area. Two of which who use a very strict pre-screening service are All Around the Home which helps homeowners nationwide, and CalFinder, serving the San Francisco Bay Area in areas like general remodeling. Both make it easy for their visitors to receive free estimates from the best contractors in their area.

These contractors will help you to plan your budget, and give you realistic costs for your next project. Be sure to compare contractors, prices and services to make sure you find the one just right for you. By making a realistic and accurate budget, almost anyone can afford to do their dream remodel or renovation!

KitchenAid food processor or a stand Mixer: Which to get?

I have enough points saved up on my credit card to get something really nice. I’ve had my eye on a KitchenAid KFPM770 food processor this whole time, but if I wait 2 more month I would be able to get one of their really nice stand mixers. I don’t know which one to get, with all the attachments that the mixer has it can pretty much do everything that food processor does plus extra. But maybe I’m wrong, I haven’t used these before. So what is your favorite thing in the kitchen? a food processor or a stand mixer? Considering I don’t have room for both anyway, which one should I get?

I agree with the first answerer, only you yourself can determine which to get. The stand mixer has a ton of cool attachments ( sold separately ) that you can do just about anything with, including a meat grinder. How cool would that be to be able to make your own ground meat blends. See, that is something I would be interested in.
My food processor gets good use though. I grate cheeses myself, make salsa, use it for making pie dough etc.
